DEIGHTON, John "Gassy Jack," mariner, saloon keeper (b Nov 1830, Hull, England; d 29 May 1875, Vancouver). At age 14 he went to sea and became an officer on an American clipper ship. After joining the tail end of the gold rush in California, he moved north to BC in 1858 to join the FRASER R GOLD RUSH.
