Demers, Modeste


DEMERS, Modeste, Catholic bishop (b 11 Oct 1809, St Nicolas, QC; d 21 July 1871, Victoria). He received his ordination as a priest in 1836 and 2 years later came west to BC, where he and Norbert Blanchet were the first Catholic missionaries in the Pacific Northwest (see ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH). Demers passed the Big Bend of the COLUMBIA R in Nov 1838 and became the first priest to celebrate Mass on the BC mainland.
