DEROCHE, pop 149, is a hamlet on the north side of the FRASER R 19 km east of MISSION. It is named for Joseph Deroche (1824–1922), a teamster who hauled supplies to the Cariboo GOLD RUSH before settling here on a farm. Nearby Nicomen Slough is a wintering area for EAGLES, trumpeter SWANS and other waterfowl.
