DOLLAR, Robert S., lumberman, shipowner (b 1844, Falkirk, Scotland; d 16 May 1932, San Rafael, CA). At age 14 Dollar moved to Ottawa with his father; 2 years later he began working in logging camps on the Gatineau R. There he taught himself to read and write, and at age 21 he was made foreman. Later he acquired his own LOGGING operation but went bankrupt and took several years to pay off his debts.
