DOUGLAS, Gilean, writer, naturalist (b 1 Feb 1900, Toronto; d 31 Oct 1993, Cortes Island). Raised in a prosperous professional family, she began her writing career at age 19 as a Toronto newspaper reporter. Through 4 marriages and recurring health problems, she made her living as an independent writer.
