EASTHOPE BROTHERS manufactured boat engines on the coast for 7 decades. Ernest Easthope and his family immigrated to NEW WESTMINSTER from England in 1889. He and his son Vincent began making primitive 2-cycle gas engines with make-and-break ignition in 1900. The Easthope 2-cycle ran rough and was unreliable, but it was popular because it offered fishers the first available and affordable means of powering their gillnet skiffs.
