ENGLISH BAY is the inner portion of BURRARD INLET on the south side of VANCOUVER's downtown peninsula leading into FALSE CREEK. It encompasses a popular strip of sand beach extending along the north side of the bay near the entrance to STANLEY PARK. Originally a SQUAMISH fishing camp (see also FISHING, ABORIGINAL), the beach developed in the 1890s as a summer swimming spot for residents of the city's West End.
