English, Marshall Martin


ENGLISH, Marshall Martin, pioneer fish canner (b 8 Apr 1840, Charleston, VA; d not available). He was among the first generation of SALMON CANNERS who established the industry at the mouth of the FRASER R. He arrived in BC from California and in 1877 built his first cannery at BROWNSVILLE, opposite NEW WESTMINSTER. In 1882 he moved closer to the mouth of the river and built the English Cannery (later the Phoenix), the first cannery at STEVESTON. He sold to the ANGLO-BC PACKING CO in 1891 and...
