FIGURE SKATING began in an organized way in BC with the formation of the Connaught Figure Skating Club in VANCOUVER, the province's first, in 1914. The mild CLIMATE prevented figure skating from becoming very popular until the first public rinks were built: Kerrisdale Arena in Vancouver in 1949 and the Capilano Winter Club on the North Shore in 1955.
