FIGURE SKATING began in an organized way in BC with the formation of the Connaught Figure Skating Club in VANCOUVER, the province's first, in 1914. The mild CLIMATE prevented figure skating from becoming very popular until the first public rinks were built: Kerrisdale Arena in Vancouver in 1949 and the Capilano Winter Club on the North Shore in 1955. International figure skating stars Barbara Ann Scott and Sonja Henie both performed in Vancouver in the early 1950s, helping to raise the profile...
