Fonte, Bartholomew de


FONTE, Bartholomew de, a mysterious "Admiral of New Spain and Prince of Chile" credited in a 1767 London publication with a voyage to the N Pacific coast in 1640. There he reportedly discovered a navigable sea passage across N America at about the latitude of DIXON ENTRANCE (54°). Influential French cartographers promoted the existence of the passage and it was widely accepted until disproved officially by the voyages of Jacinto CAAMAÑO in 1792 and George VANCOUVER in 1793.
