Fort St John


FORT ST JOHN, city, pop 17,402 (2006), at Mile 47 on the ALASKA HWY, is near ROCKY MT FORT, the first white settlement in mainland BC, established in 1794 on the PEACE R by Alexander MACKENZIE for the NORTH WEST CO. The fort moved several times between 1794 and 1823, when it was closed. It reopened in 1860.
