Fort Taku

FORT TAKU, also known as Fort Durham, was built by the HBC in 1840, south of where the TAKU R flows into Taku Inlet on the Alaska Panhandle, near the present site of Juneau, AK. Construction of the trading post followed Russia's agreement to lease the Panhandle to the HBC. It turned out to be cheaper to conduct trade by periodic ship visits, and the fort closed in 1843.
