GIBBS, Mifflin Wistar, merchant (b 17 Apr 1823, Philadelphia; d 11 July 1915, Little Rock, AR). Born a free black man, he went to California during the gold rush and prospered as a merchant. He came north to VICTORIA in 1858 as part of a group of American BLACKS who were sick of racial discrimination in the US.
