GITANYOW () , pop 369 (2001), is a GITKSAN village 20 km north of the SKEENA R on the STEWART–CASSIAR Hwy (see ROADS AND HWYS). It was formerly called Kitwancool, "people of a small village," referring to the terrible impact of disease and warfare on the population (see also ABORIGINAL DEMOGRAPHY).
