GOSSE, Josiah, mariner (b 1 Sept 1865, Harbour Grace, NF; d 1938, Victoria). He left home at age 13 as a sailor on a merchant ship trading from NF to Europe and the West Indies. In 1886 he sailed around Cape Horn to BURRARD INLET. He returned by rail the following year to stay. After a summer of fishing he joined the CANADIAN PACIFIC NAVIGATION CO and worked on coastal steamers. He obtained his master's ticket, becoming BC's first licensed coastal pilot, and commanded a series of vessels...
