HAKE, Pacific (Merluccius productus), or Pacific whiting, is a slim, silvery fish that schools in the open ocean along the outer coast. Closely related to the Pacific COD, it grows up to 1 m in length. Recreational fishers (see FISHING, SPORT) consider the hake a nuisance fish, but it has been taken offshore commercially since the mid-1970s.
