HARROP, a quiet rural settlement 20 km northeast of NELSON, on the CPR and the south shore of the West Arm of KOOTENAY LK, is connected to Longbeach on Hwy 3A by a cable ferry (see also BIG BAR CRK). A ferry of one sort or another has operated here since 1925; before that the area was served by PADDLEWHEEL STEAMBOATS. It is named after Ernest Harrop, who moved here in 1905 and became the first postmaster.
