HECTOR, James, doctor, naturalist (b 16 Mar 1834, Edinburgh, Scotland; d 5 Nov 1907, Wellington, NZ). He graduated from medical school in 1856 and immediately was appointed natural scientist to the Palliser Expedition to explore western Canada. In Aug 1858 he travelled on horseback into the ROCKY MTS, passing the present site of Banff and crossing via Vermilion Pass into BC.
