HILTON, a farming (see AGRICULTURE) and LOGGING district 50 km east of VERNON near the MONASHEE MTS, got its start during a brief GOLD mining frenzy on nearby Cherry Crk. The first strike was in the 1860s but a number of CHINESE miners continued to work the area until much later. Hilton was named after J.A. Hiltz, an early homesteader. The settlement's original name was Jackman, after N. Jackman, another pioneer.
