HORNE, James Welton, land promoter, founder of Mission (b 3 Nov 1853, Toronto, ON; d 21 Feb 1922, Vancouver). He made a fortune speculating on land in Manitoba prior to the arrival of the CPR, then moved west to VANCOUVER in 1885 planning to do the same there. He bought land in the city and at MISSION, where a townsite was laid out in 1890. He became one of Vancouver's biggest landowners and a promoter of the city's first STREET RWY.
