HUGHES, Jane, swimmer (b 30 June 1948, Vancouver). One of many successful swimmers coached by Howard Firby at VANCOUVER's Dolphin Swim Club, she set herself apart in 1964 by setting a world record in the 880-yard freestyle. Hughes was a member of the Canadian national team 1964–67, finishing 5th in the 400-m freestyle at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and winning a bronze medal in the 440-yard individual medley and gold in the 440-yard medley relay at the 1966 British Empire Games.
