Hunt, Henry and Tony and Richard


HUNT, Henry, artist (b 16 Oct 1923, Fort Rupert; d 13 Mar 1985, Victoria). A member of the KWAKWAKA'WAKW (Kwakiutl) nation, he worked as a logger and fisher. When he was in his 30s he began carving at the provincial museum (see ROYAL BC MUSEUM), where he apprenticed with his father-in-law, Mungo MARTIN. In 1962 Hunt succeeded Martin as the museum's chief carver, a position he held until 1974. He carved many impressive TOTEM POLES and trained 3 of his sons, Tony, Richard and Stanley. Tony Hunt...
