HUPEL, 55 km northeast of VERNON on the north side of the Shuswap R just west of MABEL LK, was a ranching (see CATTLE INDUSTRY) and LOGGING settlement with a store and post office. It was named after Herman Hupel, who homesteaded here in the 1890s and became the first postmaster.
