JAFFRAY, pop 498, is 35 km southeast of CRANBROOK on the CPR's Crowsnest branch. Two SAWMILLS were built here in the early 1900s and some RWY LOGGING took place. The mills have since closed but the FOREST INDUSTRY still supports the local economy, along with TOURISM and the CATTLE INDUSTRY; MINING was important in the early days. The community was named after Senator Robert Jaffray of Toronto, president of the Crows Nest Pass Coal Co.
