JAMES, Charlie (Yakuglas), artist (b circa 1870, Fort Rupert; d 1938). He produced TOTEM POLES, house posts and ceremonial objects for the use of the KWAKWAKA'WAKW and was best known outside his community for the many model totem poles he produced for sale. He was the progenitor of a line of Kwakwaka'wakw artists, including his stepson Mungo MARTIN and Henry and Tony Hunt. See also ART, NORTHWEST COAST ABORIGINAL.
