Jarvis, Laurie

JARVIS, Laurie, fisher (b 2 Mar 1892, Helsinki, Finland; d 1965). Born Laurie Mattias Jarvelainnen, he immigrated from Finland to the planned utopian community at SOINTULA on MALCOLM ISLAND in 1901, changing his surname because most people couldn't pronounce it. After working as a logger he joined the gillnetting fleet and in the off-season operated a small boatyard on the Sointula waterfront (see BOATBUILDING; FISHING, COMMERCIAL). At this time gillnets were still pulled laboriously by hand....
