KAIN, Conrad, mountaineer (b 10 Aug 1883, Nasswald, Austria; d 2 Feb 1934, Cranbrook). He began guiding as a young man in Austria to help support his widowed mother and 6 siblings. In 1909 the Alpine Club of Canada hired him as its first official guide to lead climbers in the ROCKY MTS. Widely considered to be the greatest of all Canadian mountain guides, he made many first ascents including Mt ROBSON, highest peak in the Canadian Rockies (1913); Mt Farnham, highest in the PURCELL Mts (1914);...
