Kemano


KEMANO, on the Kemano R near where it drains into the GARDNER CANAL on the North Coast, is an ancient village site of the Henaaksiala people. Residents amalgamated with the HAISLA (Kitamat) at Kitamaat in 1953 but still return annually to harvest EULACHON from the river. Nearby is a massive generating station (see HYDROELECTRICITY) that was built to provide power for the ALCAN ALUMINUM CO smelter at KITIMAT 75 km to the north; it began generating electricity in 1954.
