KINGFISHER, BELTED (Ceryle alcyon), is the only species of kingfisher in Canada. In BC it occurs widely along the coast and throughout the Interior, perching high above the water looking for prey. It feeds by plunging head first into the water after small FISH, FROGS and INSECTS, which it carries back to its perch to devour. It nests in burrows excavated in dirt banks.
