Kogawa, Joy

KOGAWA, Joy, writer (b 6 June 1935, Vancouver). Her family was interned by the Canadian government in 1942 during the RELOCATION of JAPANESE Canadians from the West Coast. They lived first in the SLOCAN district, then on the prairies. Kogawa has written several books of poetry but is best known for her novels: Obasan (1981), about the internment, winner of the Books in Canada First Novel Award; Itsuka (1992), set against the background of the redress movement; and The Rain Ascends (1995).
