LEECH, Peter John, surveyor (b circa 1828, Dublin, Ireland; d 6 June 1899). He came to BC in 1858 as a surveyor with the ROYAL ENGINEERS and, when the engineers were recalled in 1863, he took his discharge and remained in the colony. In 1864 he was second-in-command of the VANCOUVER ISLAND EXPLORING EXPEDITION, which discovered GOLD on a tributary of the Sooke R. The stream and the MINING camp were named for him (see LEECHTOWN).
