LOWNDES, Joan, art critic (b 1915, Southend-on-Sea, England; d 20 June 2001, Vancouver). She moved to VANCOUVER with her family when she was four years old. After undergraduate studies at UBC she obtained her doctorate in French literature at the Sorbonne in Paris. She taught briefly at UBC, then moved to New York City in 1940 and launched her career in arts journalism.
