LOWRY, Clarence Malcolm, novelist (b 28 July 1909, Birkenhead, England; d 27 June 1957, Ripe, England). One of England's most notorious expatriate writers, he moved to BC in 1939 and lived in a shack at DOLLARTON from 1940 to 1954, where he finished his most celebrated novel, Under the Volcano (1947).
