MacDONALD, Ranald, adventurer (b 3 Feb 1824, Fort George, OR; d 24 Aug 1894, Toroda, WA). His father was a Scottish fur trader working for the HBC; his mother was a Chinook woman, the daughter of a chief. Ranald was raised at FORT LANGLEY and Fort Colville and educated in Red River. At age 17 he embarked on a life of adventure, working first as a deckhand on Mississippi riverboats, then shipping out of New York as a sailor.
