Madsen, Nels


MADSEN, Nels, logger, union activist (b 1899, Denmark; d 1977, Vancouver). He immigrated to BC during the 1920s and was active in the LUMBER WORKERS' INDUSTRIAL UNION and in the International Woodworkers of America (IWA) (see INDUSTRIAL, WOOD AND ALLIED WORKERS OF CANADA) after it was formed in 1937. As a member of the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion during the Spanish Civil War, he saw front-line action and was taken prisoner by Nationalist forces in 1938. A lifelong Communist, he was expelled...
