MANDRAKE, Leon, "Leon Mandrake the Magician" (b 11 Apr 1911, New Westminster; d 27 Jan 1993, Surrey). He began performing on stage at age 11 and began touring in 1927. Eventually he became one of the most famous performing magicians in the world. He had his own television show and was an inspiration for the cartoon strip "Mandrake the Magician." He performed professionally for more than 50 years, the last 40 of these with Velvet, his wife and partner.
