MAPLE, Canada's national tree, occurs in BC in 3 species. The largest, bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum), commonly grows along the coast south of ALERT BAY. It has the largest leaf of any Canadian tree and its hard wood has some commercial uses, including furniture, panelling and musical instruments. FIRST NATIONS used it to make CANOE paddles.
