MARA, John Andrew, merchant, politician (b 21 July 1840, Toronto; d Feb 1920, Victoria). He arrived in BC with a party of OVERLANDERS from Ontario in 1862 to join the Cariboo GOLD RUSH. Instead he settled at KAMLOOPS, where he worked as a packer, then commenced a successful business career. He owned a series of steamboats on the Thompson–Shuswap system as well as a general store.
