Matsqui


MATSQUI was a rural municipality in the central FRASER VALLEY, 70 km east of VANCOUVER. The name derives from a STO:LO Nation word meaning "stretch of higher ground," a reference to a portage between the FRASER R and Sumas Lk. The earliest settlers arrived in the 1860s and the local economy relied on AGRICULTURE, principally DAIRY FARMING, eggs, poultry, vegetables and BERRIES.
