MAURELLE ISLAND, 54 sq km, is located in the INSIDE PASSAGE between QUADRA ISLAND and the mainland. Hole in the Wall, a rapids familiar to coastal boaters, lies along the north coast. Known originally as Middle Valdes Island, it was renamed in 1903 after Francisco Antonio Maurelle, a Spanish naval officer who visited the coast in 1775.
