McMICKING, Thomas, leader of the Overlanders (b 16 Apr 1829, Stamford, ON; d 25 Aug 1866, near New Westminster). A former schoolteacher and general merchant in Queenston, ON, he helped to organize and lead the main party of OVERLANDERS who travelled from Ontario across the western Interior to the CARIBOO goldfields in the summer of 1862 (see GOLD RUSH, CARIBOO). After failing to strike it rich as a prospector, he descended the FRASER R to NEW WESTMINSTER, where he found work in a shingle mill....
