McMILLAN, James, fur trader (b circa 1783, Scotland; d 1858, Perth, Scotland). He led the expedition that founded FORT LANGLEY for the HBC in 1827, then commanded the post for its first 2 years. McMillan was originally a member of the HBC's great rival, the NORTH WEST CO (NWC). He came to BC with David THOMPSON's 1808 expedition across the ROCKY MTS and was one of the Nor'westers who purchased Astoria from the PACIFIC FUR CO in 1813.
