MEARES, John, fur trader (b circa 1756; d 1809). After serving in the Royal Navy, he made his first trading voyage to the Northwest Coast in 1786. He spent a horrible winter in Prince William Sound, where 23 of his men died, but was rescued by 2 rival traders, Nathaniel PORTLOCK and George DIXON. In 1788 he was in NOOTKA SOUND, where he established a trading post and built a 40-ton schooner, NORTH WEST AMERICA, the first vessel of European design built on the coast.
