MIRROR LAKE, a community on the west shore of KOOTENAY LK, 50 km northeast of NELSON, was the site of an early shipyard. Several PADDLEWHEEL STEAMBOATS, including the International, Kaslo and Argenta, were built here during 1896–1900. The Mirror Lake Ice Co, incorporated in 1895, supplied the area with block ice. Fruit growing, especially apples and cherries (see TREE FRUITS), was also important.
