MONKEY PUZZLE TREE (Araucaria araucana) is a large evergreen imported from Chile and Argentina. It is characterized by hard, scaly, pointed leaves that cover the trunk and limbs, and its appearance is sufficiently unusual to attract attention. This tree was especially popular with urban landscapers in the 1920s and 1930s. British Columbians may remember that sighting a tree gave a youngster permission to pinch his neighbour and exclaim, "Monkey tree, can't pinch me."
