MORIGEAU, François, pioneer settler (b 1793, St Martin, QC; d 31 Mar 1870, Fort Colville, WA). He is considered to be the first white settler in the WINDERMERE valley and possibly the first anywhere in the KOOTENAY. He arrived in BC about 1818 and set up as an independent fur trader in the upper COLUMBIA R valley. A missionary once called him "the monarch who rules at the source of the Columbia."
