MOTTO, PROVINCIAL, is splendor sine occasu ("splendour without diminishment"). The words are engraved beneath BC's official shield, which was designed by Rev Arthur Beanlands in 1895 and adopted that year by the provincial government. The design was not confirmed by Britain's royal College of Arms until 1906, however, and other elements of the provincial COAT OF ARMS were not granted until 1987.
