MOUNT ASSINIBOINE PROVINCIAL PARK, 390.5 sq km, nestles in the ROCKY MTS on the Alberta border, 48 km south of Banff. This wilderness park is dominated by Mt Assiniboine (el 3,618 m), a Matterhorn-like peak, the sixth-highest in the Rockies and first scaled in 1901. The park started as a camp for the Alpine Club of Canada and became BC's seventh provincial PARK in 1922.
