MOUNTAIN BIKING emerged in California during the 1970s when the sport's pioneers began building wide-wheeled, multi-geared bicycles strong enough to handle back-country roads and trails. In BC Grayson Bain and Jake Heilbron, owners of a Vancouver bike shop, began selling the new-style bikes and in 1981 Bain founded Rocky Mountain Bicycles, Canada's first mountain bike maker.
