Muncho Lake

MUNCHO LAKE, 149 sq km, lies beside the ALASKA HWY at the top end of the spectacular northern ROCKY MTS 175 km west of FORT NELSON. It is the centrepiece of Muncho Lake Provincial PARK (884.16 sq km) and one of the best spots in BC for viewing Stone's sheep (see MOUNTAIN SHEEP). The water's distinctive emerald colouring is caused by copper dioxides on the lake bottom. A small community beside the lake caters to travellers. The name comes from the KASKA for "big lake."
